About ProRail

Who We Are:

ProRail is a nonprofit, nonpartisan all-volunteer, tax-exempt organization dedicated to serving rail passengers and those supporters of passenger rail.  We are financed entirely by donations and members dues.

It was established in January 1985 as, and remains, a chapter of the Wisconsin Association of Railroad Passengers.

We have a dual mission -- helping people use the train for business and pleasure, and working to improve and expand passenger train options in Wisconsin, the Midwest, and the U.S.

ProRail is the only citizens group in this area whose single purpose is to represent the interests of the intercity train-riding public, whether living or working in or visiting Dane and surrounding counties. Our members travel by train and we’ve helped thousands of others to do the same.

We also work closely with the National Association of Railroad Passengers and rail passenger organizations in surrounding states.

Web Sites:

We offer multiple Web sites, each offering some differing features not duplicated by our others.

Our main Web site is www.prorail.com, re-designed and re-launched in January 2010.

Facebookhttp://tinyurl.com/prorailfacebook  Visitors can post comments about ProRail announcements displayed there, and also raise their own topics or comment on those of others on the Fan page.

Twitterhttp://twitter.com/railmatters  These are short news items, usually posted here first, often with links to more information.  Some content is exclusive.  (You also may read the latest messages on our prorail.com homepage.)

ProRail Travelhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/prorailtravel  This is an interactive Web site where subscribers/members can post rail travel questions, tips, and comments, as well as receive messages from ProRail and others related to traveling by train.  You have the option to have all message posts sent to you when posted or combined and sent only once a day, or you can choose no email and instead read them on the Web.  The message search engine is useful.

ProRail Action:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/prorailaction  This Web site is focused on helping subscribers/members advocate for passenger rail, and has all the same features as ProRail Travel.

(We still maintain for now our old ProRail Web site at http://communities.madison.com/prorail, which largely contains information through 2009.)

ProRail relies on its Web site, ProRail Action and ProRail Travel Yahoo Groups, RailMatters (Twitter), and ProRail’s Facebook page to keep its members and friends informed on a more timely and through basis.  Special issues of our newsletter, “Keeping Track,” still are published from time to time, when events warrant.

ProRail holds several meetings a year in Dane and surrounding counties for its members and the public, on dates to be announced and as events warrant.  Meetings are free and usually no advance reservations are required

The Board meets more frequently and meetings are open to ProRail members and invited guests.  Contact us to be added to our notification list.

Membership in ProRail the first year is $20, which also includes membership in the Wisconsin Association of Railroad Passengers. (ProRail members must also be WisARP members.)

Send your payment made out to ProRail, along with name and address information, to ProRail Membership, P.O. Box 5401, Madison, WI 53705-0401. Include an e-mail address, if you wish.

ProRail and the Wisconsin Association of Railroad Passengers are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as 501c3 organizations.  Dues and gifts to ProRail and WisARP are 100% tax deductible.

To Donate:

Donations also are welcome in any amount from members and non-members alike.</b>  Use the same address as shown above; please indicate it is a donation.  Thanks for your support!

The Wisconsin Association of Railroad Passengers (WisARP) was established in 1977 to promotepassengertrain service in Wisconsin and the U.S.A. WisARP is the Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP). This national organization is headquartered in Washington, DC. It lobbies Congress on behalf of our national rail passenger system and keeps it's members informed of Amtrak and transit activities, and of federal actions affecting Amtrak. It works closely with WisARP and other state passenger rail associations, but has no connection with them beyond a similarity in name and purpose.
